The Progressive Catholic Church Metropolitan of the United Kingdom Rt Reverend Dr Cleminson has called upon the Government to act now to reverse the cuts it has made year after year to the legal aid budget as it is denying many of the most vulnerable in society the access to justice in the UK courts. It has been announced recently that there are further cuts to come as well The Criminal Bar Association (CBA) has said the budget for justice is forecast to fall by £400m next year, from £6.6bn in 2017/18 to £6.2bn in 2018/19, then to £6bn for 2019/20.

The Rt Reverend Dr Cleminson said in response to the cuts “This government by cutting the budget are denying women and children and disabled people the redress they are entitled to as many cannot afford to take cases to court whether it be simple things such as benefit cases, domestic violence cases or such likes, I am now calling on the Justice secretary to halt the cuts here and now”.

“We are supposed to be living in a society that promotes fairness and equality and these cuts to the legal aid budget do not promote either fairness nor do they promote equality. on the contrary they promote an agenda of inequality and injustice. Its exactly what we can expect from this conservative government.”

Deus autem omnipotens benedicat tibi.

Rt Reverend Dr Ryan Cleminson OSB DD

Metropolitanate of St David’s and The Holy Trinity for The Progressive Catholic Church
