WALES CARE OSCAR FOR TY HENDY’S STEFAN JENKINS

Last Friday saw local Kidwelly man Stefan Jenkins scoop the Wales Care Award, something worth clear celebration and quite an achievement in the care industry. He’s based at Consensus’ Ty Hendy Service in Hendy, Pontarddulais and is a valued individual.

The Wales Care Awards, are a celebration of excellence across the Wales care sector. The awards honour and congratulate those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field. The Awards affectionately known as the ‘Care Oscars’ are an annual event run by Care Forum Wales to showcase best practice across the care sector.

23-year-old, Stefan Jenkins who lives in Kidwelly, was awarded Bronze for the Leading Practice in Learning Disability & Mental Health Services Award. Joined by his fiancée, colleagues and people they support Stefan enjoyed the glittering ceremony which took place at Cardiff City Hall on Friday the 19th of October.

Stefan had always wanted to work in the social care sector since the age of 15 and was inspired by his nurse mum Rita. He hopes his success at a young age will encourage more school leavers to consider a career in the care sector.

He is a committed colleague who works hard to ensure the people he supports have the best opportunity to take greater control over their lives by developing and building upon their skills and to ultimately realise their ambitions and increase their overall wellbeing.

Earlier this year, when he was just 22, Stefan was promoted to Team Leader and currently manages a team of 36 care and support workers.

“He ensures that the people we support are treated in a person-centred way and with respect and dignity. Stefan applies himself in a way that the people we support can relate to and enhances the quality of service we offer,” adds Lorraine Jackson, Service Manager of Ty Hendy.

This award recognises those who support individuals to maintain or regain life skills, always respecting the uniqueness of everyone, maintaining dignity and promoting choice and independence. It places focus on those who continually demonstrate they work within the criteria laid down in the Care Council for Wales Codes of Practice for Social Care Workers the lasting difference to the quality of service provision a support worker makes, by developing their skills and knowledge acting as a role model for their colleagues in-house.
