South Wales ‘on guard’ for invasion of Yeoman Warders
Audience members can expect to be held captive by a colourful troop of royal soldiers this weekend, as soloists and singers from across South Wales join together for a rousing charity performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s romcom operetta, ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’.
The popular musical story features flirtatious maidens, a bumbling jailer, a lovesick jester and a feisty but hapless troop of royal ‘Yeoman Warders’, resplendent in their bright red uniforms. The production, which takes place in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl on Saturday the 17th of November, is presented by South Wales-based company, The Mid Glamorgan Savoyards.
Savoyards musical director Roger Hudd, said:
“The Yeomen of the Guard’ is the Savoyards’ 24th charity production, and I never cease to be humbled by the generosity of some of South Wales’s most experienced Gilbert and Sullivan soloists, chorus members and musicians who give their time to take part in our annual charity performance. This year’s company sounds as strong as ever, and includes cast members from right across the region, from Cardiff to Swansea.”
With a storyline set in the Tower of London, it is not the first royal encounter for musical director Roger Hudd. Earlier this year he was awarded the British Empire Medal for his contribution to charity and the Arts. Since starting in 1994 the Savoyards have raised more than £65,000 for various local and national charities. This year the proceeds will go to Kidney Research Wales, Prostate Cymru and Macmillan Cancer Support.
