THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
The word ‘frustration’ does not adequately express what many are feeling at the moment about ‘Brexit. Added to it all is the threat by some of the Prime Minister’s party to remove her from office and by doing so to put an end to the ‘deal’ she and many other feel is the best way forward considering all the pitfalls of a ‘no’ deal. The ‘will she’ ‘won’t she’ surrounding Mrs May’s fate is more alike to a Jeffery Archer political ‘who done it’ than main line politics.
Expressions like ‘Getting the knives out’. Clandestine meetings of so-called colleagues in House of Commons corridors with letters held nervously over letter boxes is almost farcical. Then there are Messrs Jacob Rees- Mogg and Boris Johnson and others who we are told are ‘Keeping their powder dry’; begs the question as to who will be first to pounce? Will this week bring much more of the same or will there be a much-needed bolt out of the blue that will bring the consensus we are all hoping for?
I’m sure there must be a Hollywood block buster down the line when this drama comes to an end along with biographies and autobiographies filling the shelves for future historians to ponder – the question is who will end up the baddies of the show and who the heroes? Your guess is as good as mine!
I have met so many in my Ministry who have been casualties of situations that life has thrown at them. The sudden loss of a loved one, a friendship that became strained, a relationship which has broken down and the hurt and distance that has followed. The Bible gives us sound advice as far as the unpredictability of life is concerned while at the same time giving us the assurance that whatever happens we are never alone.
A very familiar Psalm says of God who is our Shepherd who cares for us in whatever situations we find ourselves. That’s why the words of a motto card I had in Sunday school many years ago remain so true and relevant. In bold letters it says ‘Do the good that you can, to all the people you can, in all the ways you can, as long as you can.’ Seems to me that if we do just that then whatever life brings, we know that we will have done our best and can face an unknown future with renewed confidence and hope – ‘Brexit’ included!
