CHRISTMAS EVE, CUSTOMERS BANK, 1930’s.

Christmas Eve in Llanelly, the snow began to fall,
It settled on the shoppers huddled against the wall.
They stood around shivering in the freezing cold,
As they watched the fattened geese being sold.
Other meats were being sold just as fast,
Oh how slowly did the hours slither past.
They waited for the time that the market would shut,
And even then they could only afford the cheapest cut.
Scavenging for vegetables, discarded on the floor,
They searched and hunted ’til they could find no more.
Walking down Queen Victoria Road they went,
Smiling because their meagre money had been well spent.
Over Union Bridge and triumphantly into the ‘Bank’,
Then into their homes, so damp and dank.
As their whole families stood and clapped their hands in glee,
Because they had Christmas dinner, maybe also their tea!
