Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds and Welsh Lib Dem Councillors across Wales have called for the UK Government to establish a no deal preparation fund for councils to allow them to prepare for a no deal Brexit.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Leader Jane Dodds said:
“Everyone but the most extreme Brexiteers accepts that a no deal Brexit would be disastrous for Wales and the UK, but whilst it remains an option councils and businesses must prepare for it.
“The fact a no deal Brexit is still possible is the fault of the UK Government. Their incompetence, hubris and stubbornness has caused this Brexit mess and the uncertainty that comes with it.
“No planning can prepare councils for a no deal Brexit, but responsible councils should be devoting substantial resources to alleviating this worst-case scenario. Given the immense financial pressures already facing councils, it should be the UK Government that pays for this preparation. Especially given the large sums of money they’re spending on their own preparations.
“A no deal Brexit would be devastating for Wales, but we know any Brexit will damage our economy and weaken our society. We must give the people the final say and the opportunity to choose an Exit from Brexit.”
