Swiss Valley xmas card comp visit

Llanelli’s MP Nia Griffith and Assembly Member Lee Waters have visited local schools to award the prizes for their annual Christmas card competition. They were joined by George Parker from the Llanelli-based company Parker Plant Hire, which sponsored this year’s competition.

Oliver Davies from Swiss Valley Primary and Talieah Bevan from Maes y Morfa, winners of the junior and infant sections respectively,  both received a framed copy of their winning designs, which are featured on the MP and AM’s Christmas cards. Their schools were also awarded £100 each and the winning and runner-up designs have been on display in Llanelly House throughout December, alongside many of the entries that were commended by the panel of judges.

Nia Griffith MP said: “It was a pleasure to visit Swiss Valley and Maes y Morfa to congratulate the talented Oliver and Talieah for winning the Christmas card competition this year and award the prizes.

“We were very impressed by the high standard of entries, and I know the judges had a difficult time picking the winners. It is always a joy to celebrate the creativity and talent of local schoolchildren, and the exhibition of card designs in Llanelly House this year has been particularly good.

“I would like to thank all the pupils and schools who took part. We are very  grateful to the judges for volunteering their time, to Fay Hampson & Ellen Davies for all their help administering the entries and preparing the display, and to George Parker for sponsoring the competition for another year.”

Lee Waters AM added: “Every year, I’m astounded by the talented art work from children around the Llanelli constituency. The cards they design are always so creative and really puts you in the festive spirit.

“This year was no exception, and our judges must have found it incredibly hard to choose. I would like to thank the winners and runners-up for our lovely Christmas cards, as well as all the other pupils who took part.”

The infant runners-up were Sophia Suter (Ysgol yFelin), Thea Ashford (Maes y Morfa) and Oliver Dunne (Swiss Valley), and the Junior runners-up were Isla Jenkins (Ffwrnes), FreddieCourfield (Ffwrnes) and Tegan Treharne (Ysgol yFelin).

The difficult job of judging the entries was undertaken by local artist Therese James, retired Primary School Headteacher Liz Parker and Paul Carter, the House Manager at Llanelly House. The competition was open to all local primary schools in the Llanelli constituency, and the MP and AM received several hundred entries on the theme of ‘snowman’.
