According to the Action Fraud website (https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/alert/fake-tv-licencing-refund-emails), fraudsters have also been sending out fake TV Licence refund emails that lead to convincing looking websites in a bid to steal victim bank account details.
They (Action Fraud) have had over 100 reports about these scam emails!
They claim that TV Licencing have been trying to get hold of recipients regarding an overpayment refund or that due to invalid account details a credit was not possible. The refund links lead to cloned TV Licencing websites that are designed to harvest bank account and credit card details.
TV Licensing also give information on their site explaining on how to tell if any emails are fraud or from them. Please go to https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/faqs/FAQ288 to view.
How to check if an email is a scam? Action Fraud says you should check:
- The sender’s email address – does it look like one TV Licensing would use?
- The subject line – anything such as “action required” or “security alert” should be treated with suspicion
- Spelling and grammar – grammatical errors suggest it is likely to be a scam
- The style – scammers often take real emails and amend them, so be wary of emails that seem too familiar or casual
- The link – does it go through to the official TV Licensing website?
If you think you have received an email from fraudsters, you should report it to Action Fraud (https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/)
