Llanelli MP marks Holocaust Memorial Day

Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday the 27th of January, Llanelli’s MP Nia Griffith has signed the Book of Commitment in Parliament to honour those who were murdered during the Holocaust.

Ms Griffith also paid tribute to the Holocaust Education Trust, the charity which coordinates the commemorations, and all those who work to educate children about the Holocaust. This Sunday (the 27th of January) will mark the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau – the site of the largest mass murder in history.

Thousands of commemorative events are being organised by schools, faith groups and community organisations across the country to remember all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. The theme for this year’s commemorations is ‘Torn from Home’.

Nia Griffith MP said: “It was a privilege to sign the Holocaust Memorial Trust’s Book of Commitment again this year. Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity to take time to reflect on the horrors of the past and renew our commitment to ensuring that they cannot happen again.

“As I wrote in the Book of Commitment, we must always challenge the prejudices that allow atrocities like the Holocaust to take place. That includes eradicating the scourge of antisemitism in all its forms. On Sunday our thoughts will be with all those whose lives were taken or destroyed by the Holocaust.”

Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust said: “The Holocaust did not start in the gas chambers but with hate filled words. Our mission is to educate young people from every background about the Holocaust and its contemporary relevance.

“We are very grateful to Nia Griffith MP for signing the Book of Commitment, signalling a continued commitment to remembering the victims of the Holocaust as well as challenging antisemitism, prejudice and bigotry in all its forms.”
