Late last year police officers from Tarian, the Regional Organised Crime Unit, supported by South Wales and Gwent Police executed a series of warrants which resulted in the six being charged with conspiracy to supply class A drugs and brought before the court.

After Friday’s sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Julian Bull, of Tarian said:

“This was a very detailed investigation which was run by Tarian and has brought to justice eight people involved in the supply of cocaine in the Newport area.

“Operation Jackdaw is an investigation into the criminal activities of an organised crime group who are responsible for the distribution of large amounts of class A drugs from the north west of England into south Wales.

“Throughout the investigation, we’ve been able to prove that organised crime groups such as this have been responsible for bringing heroin worth millions to south Wales.

Tara Jones

“There is a human cost to the trade of supplying drugs, and we will work tirelessly to stop this.  I cannot over-emphasise the dangers of heroin and the harm it can cause to the community as a whole.  It is good to know that these criminals are now behind bars and unable to continue profiting from the misery their trade brings to our neighbourhoods.

Zain Abbas

“We will continue to target others involved in the illegal drugs trade and I urge anyone with information or suspicions to call 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, to tell us what they know.

“As this case shows, someone who is perceived to be a small-time criminal can often be linked to a much larger operation, and the smallest bit of information can sometimes be the missing piece of the puzzle for our officers.”

Those sentenced were:

Tara Jones, 27, from Newport:                 5 years

Sageer Abbas, 28, from Newport:            7 years 4 months

Altaf Hussain, 22, from Newport:             10 years
