International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the world on March 8th, in fact in many countries it is a public holiday. Its an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women and focus on the inequalities that are still prevalent in our societies.

In Llanelli the Women’s Community Network and the Llanelli Multicultural Network have joined forces to host a Celebration event for the Community on the evening of March 8th at Llanelli Library.

Chair of the Women’s Community Network, Cllr. Fozia Akhtar, told the West Wales Chronicle “we are delighted to hold this event and invite people from our community to enjoy an evening of music, food and celebration”. There are still lots of issues facing women in our community, including isolation and the feeling of not being able to fulfil their potential in the work place. The event will feature stalls and stands from community groups and organisations and we are looking forward to hearing inspirational women speakers”

Annie Evans, Chair of Llanelli Multicultural Network added, the Multicultural Network has members from over 50 different backgrounds, and we are delighted to be part of a truly international day of celebrations. It is so important that we recognise the achievements of women both on the world stage and here in our Town”

Also speaking to the West Wales Chronicle, Paolo Piana Chair of The Llanelli Community Partnership told us, “we are very pleased to see the community come together for this International event, and, as always very pleased to offer our support.”

The Evening starts at 5pm at Llanelli Library and will feature, music, free food and refreshments, activities for children and short speeches from inspirational women in the community. There is a warm invitation to everybody. More details can be had by calling Fozia on 07462-363630 or Paolo on 07956-592806
