City Road serious assault: Nine arrests

Nine males aged 13 to 19 have now been arrested in connection with a serious assault which occurred on City Road, Roath.

Officers were called to an altercation involving several people at approximately 11.45pm on Thursday night (February 7th).

Those involved left prior to police arrival and since that time arrest enquiries have been carried out across the city.

Details of the arrests are as follows:

• One 17-year-old has been charged with GBH, violent disorder and possession of a bladed article. He appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning (February 11) where he was remanded in custody until a further hearing on March 11.
• An 18-year-old from Cardiff has been arrested and remain in custody at Cardiff Bay Police Station.
• Four others, two aged 16 and two aged 17, all from the West of Cardiff, who were arrested on 11 February 2019 have been arrested and released on conditional bail.
• Three others aged 13, 18 and 19 from Caerau, Butetown and Grangetown respectively, have been released on conditional bail.

A 17-year-old injured during the incident received treatment to non-life-threatening stab wounds.

Detective Sergeant Lauren Wells, from Cardiff CID, said: “We understand there are communities across Cardiff who are concerned about this incident, particularly by the age of some of those who have been arrested.

“We share these concerns and have worked relentlessly since Thursday night to identify suspects and carry out arrest enquiries.

“Knife crime has risen across the UK and unfortunately we are not an exception to that.

“We are grateful for the support of the City Road business community who have given us access to CCTV footage and would appeal for anyone with information to contact us.”
