NEWS UPDATE
Male jailed for assaulting a young child and perverting the course of justice.

Alan Griffin, aged 35, of Cwmavon, Neath Port Talbot, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, March the 1st, after pleading guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and committing an act/series of acts with intent to pervert the course of justice.

Alan Griffin, aged 35, of Cwmavon, Neath Port Talbot, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court for assaulting a child and perverting the course of justice.

He was sentenced to a total of two years and seven months last week.

The court heard, that a child under the age of two, while in Griffin’s care sustained bruising to his head and bruising to his bottom. Griffin claimed the bruising to the head was as a result of an accidental fall in the bath but was unable to say how the injury on the bottom had occurred.

The defendant said he did not notice it until he was in A&E as he was concerned about the bump to the child’s head.

Doctors who examined the child said the bruising to his head could have been accidental but the bruising to the bottom strongly suggested a non-accidental mechanism.

The charge of perverting the course of justice is in relation to Griffin asking his own mother to make a false report to police that she was responsible for dropping the child.

The court heard, Griffin had a previous conviction for assaulting a child.

Detective Constable Louise Buttle, officer in the case, said:

“This was a deliberate assault on a defenceless child. Griffin did not take responsibility for his actions, instead, he tried to pervert the course of justice by getting his own mother to
take the blame.

“Officers in the specialist child abuse investigation unit covering Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan will continue to work tirelessly to protect children and bring perpetrators of child abuse to justice.

“I hope this result sends a message to anyone who has suffered, or is currently suffering abuse, that they can come forward and any allegations will be taken seriously.”
