Local Assembly Member Lee Waters has welcomed moves to offer extra support to students studying for a Master’s Degree.

The Welsh Government has announced that Master’s students will qualify for up to £17,000 in financial support – with at least £1,000 in grant support for eligible students. Support will be made available to both part-time and full-time students, meaning that people will be able to balance improving their skills with other commitments such as work or care.

“With more students deciding to continue their studies to give themselves the best chance of a fulfilling career it’s right that we try and ensure they get the financial support they need.

“The Welsh Government has already put in place the most progressive system of support in the UK for undergraduates by returning to grants for living costs at the same level as the Living Wage. This new support for postgraduate students demonstrates our commitment to lifelong learning and our ambition for all learners in Wales.” he added.

Support for Doctoral loans for those undertaking doctorate level study will also increase in the next academic year.

As part of the commitment to support those leaving care, the full package of support will be automatically granted to care leavers under the age of 25.

Lee Waters AM added:

“High-quality education is a driving force for social mobility, productivity and wealth creation. It can help improve everyone’s lives in Wales. Making sure that financial support, and access to learning is available to as wide a range of people as possible is a key part of our ongoing commitment to improving everyone in Wales’ life chances.”
