Eluned Morgan Assembly Member supports Dogs Trust on animal welfare issues
Dog welfare charity, Dogs Trust visited the Welsh Assembly last week (the 13th of March) to discuss their ‘Pawlicy Priorities’ – for Wales with Assembly Members including Eluned Morgan AM.
The animal welfare charity, which has 21 rehoming centres across the UK and Ireland, including one in Bridgend, also officially unveiled their plans for their Cardiff rehoming centre, which is due to open in 2021.
The charity cares for around 15,000 dogs each year and never puts a healthy dog down. In the last year Dogs Trust has rehomed more than 650 dogs in Wales alone! This is a truly staggering number.
The reception gave Dogs Trust an opportunity to draw attention to its continuing concerns about the breeding and selling of dogs, as well as the use of aversive training devices such as spray, sonic and prong collars.
Dogs Trust’s Head of Public Affairs, Claire Calder, explains:
“We were delighted to visit the Welsh Assembly last week and discuss our 2019 priorities with Eluned Morgan AM. It was a good opportunity to voice our worries about dog breeding practices, and our wish for the Welsh Government to continue to take the lead on dog welfare by extending their ban on electronic shock collars to include other training devices which can be aversive to dogs.
“We are urging Assembly Members to support our calls for better enforcement of the regulations around the breeding and selling of dogs by strengthening the minimum legal requirements for dog breeding and selling. We strongly believe more needs to be done to ensure that this legislation works for the benefit of all dogs.”
Eluned Morgan AM said:
“I was pleased to attend Dogs Trust’s reception, which set out their concerns for the welfare of dogs across Wales. I am a supporter of tightening up regulations to improve the welfare of breeding dogs and their puppies which has been a long standing issue in parts of my region.”
The Dogs Trust Public Affairs team also spoke with AMs about their efforts to improve the online advertising of pets for sale through its work chairing the Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG) and the need to introduce PAAG’s minimum standards as a legal requirement.
