NATIONAL LOTTERY GRANTS ASSIST SWANSEA AND RESOUNDING AREAS

National Lottery grants provide training for young people at risk, tackle loneliness for older people in Clydach, puts on a family fun day plus help for a local school and YMCA Five groups in Swansea received grants from The National Lottery Community Fund this month, the five grants totalling £43,850. Grants are made possible thanks to players of the National Lottery.

EFGA Elim Church Swansea successfully applied for £9,980 to employ a youth mentor. They will support at-risk young people to access education, employment, and social opportunities. Photography is one of the activities on offer and Amy, one of the young people the project is helping.

Amy told us:

“I’ve always wanted to do photography and editing, but after they cancelled photography club in school there were no places to learn about it, also outside clubs are very expensive and buying a camera is expensive too”

Tom Morgan’s Friends of Brynmill Park in Swansea applied for a £4,270 grant to provide a family fun day as part of a series of events for the community run by volunteers. Peter May, Chair of the Friends Group, said:

“We welcome the grant as it will enable us to put on our community fun day in the park on 29th June 2019. The day will involve musical acts, entertainment and activities for children. Previous fun days have always been a good way of bringing neighbours together to enjoy a day in our lovely Brynmill Park.”

Walsingham Support Community Solutions will use the £10,000 grant set up and run a weekly luncheon club in the Swansea Valley for older people to help reduce isolation and loneliness through a programme of activities whilst offering support and advice.

Clare Bugler, Director of Walsingham Support Community Solutions, said:

“This money will enable us to provide transport to reconnect many more elderly members of our community in Clydach over a home cooked hot meal. For some members of our local community this will be the only social contact they will have all week.”

Swansea YMCA’s grant of £9,750 will enable disadvantaged young and older people to gain confidence, learn skills, and improve their wellbeing through the medium of music and performing arts.

Ysgol Pen-Y-Bryn in Swansea will use the £9,850 grant to run a community engagement project, hosting a range of activity days and teaching gardening, growing and building skills to local people.
