Improving the future of pasture-based livestock systems 

It is recognised that farm area is the first physical limiting factor on potential business output. The next limiting factor is the business owner’s ability to manage that area.

Farming Connect is working with James Daniel, Precision Grazing, to help develop the knowledge, skills and confidence of farmers on their pasture-based livestock systems through the newly established Prosper from Pasture grazing groups.

Farmers of all skill levels are given the opportunity to make changes to their businesses which may lead to improved profitability and sustainability of their farming systems. Prosper from Pasture is a short programme with two levels; individuals are invited to determine what level best suits them and their business.

Firstly, applicants are invited to consider the entry level programme which is aimed towards farmers who are considering what changes they could make to their businesses to increase profitability.

Being part of the entry level will provide individuals with the background knowledge in pasture management and livestock systems, the confidence and knowledge to improve their business and a base level of knowledge of calculations and “rules of thumb”. The advanced level is aimed towards farmers who already have a good level of grassland management experience but want to develop this existing knowledge even further.

The programme will provide individuals with information about Grazing Platform Design, farm mapping and paddock systems as well as grazing management and feed budgeting. Also included in the advanced level is the provision of pasture management training.

James Daniel, Director of Precision Grazing, said that the Prosper from Pasture programme is a great opportunity for like-minded people to get together to learn more about pasture and livestock systems.

“The Prosper from Pasture programme will equip farmers with the practical skills and know-how required to change their businesses using the skills they’ve developed through the programme’s meetings.

“It’s an opportunity to work alongside like-minded farmers and hear from expert speakers who will be on-hand throughout the process,” he said.

Eirwen Williams, Director of Rural Programmes with Menter a Busnes (which delivers Farming Connect on behalf of the Welsh Government), is urging all farmers to take part in this opportunity and explained that the events have been organised in order to meet the needs of a large number of Welsh farmers.

“Everyone is aware that grass is the cheapest way to feed our animals, and to make the most of this valuable resource, Prosper from Pasture provides an opportunity to get direct support on-farm from experienced experts,” she said.

Both levels are open to beef, sheep or dairy farmers. Meetings will be held regionally from May to September with limited spaces available.

Each participant must be registered with Farming Connect and have a valid Nutrient Management Plan.
