Llanelli MP Nia Griffith supports Earth Hour

Llanelli’s MP Nia Griffith has pledged to switch off her lights for Earth Hour this coming Saturday (the 30^th of March) and do her bit to protect the planet all year round.

Earth Hour, which involves people around the world switching off lights from 8.30-9.30pm on a Saturday towards the end of March, is the largest global environmental event. Ms Griffith was one of over 100 MPs who gathered in Parliament last week to show their support for Earth Hour.

Nia Griffith MP explained:

“I always try join with others in the UK and around the world in switching off lights and electronic devices for Earth Hour. This is an important opportunity to save energy and remind us all of our responsibility to do what we can to tackle climate change throughout the year.

“Switching off our lights for an hour might not seem like a big deal, but when we all come together our collective action can make a significant difference. Whether it’s using a reusable cup or taking public transport where possible, every little effort we make will help to protect our planet.

“There can be no doubt that climate change is one of the biggest challenges we face. Whilst it has unfortunately dropped off the political agenda in recent years due to inaction from the Tories in Westminster, there is lots that can be done at a local level to help prevent global warming.

“One example of this is the Gwendraeth Valley Energy Co-operative, who I’ve been working with on a solar panel project aiming to deliver affordable, renewable energy for people in Kidwelly. I have also been involved in the Women’s Institute campaign to plant trees in urban areas, which will help to mitigate the effects of climate change as well as improve air quality and reduce flood risk.”

At WWF’s Parliamentary event last Wednesday (the 19^th of March), Nia Griffith and other MPs pledged to use their #VoiceForThePlanet and send the message that we cannot simply sit back and watch the destruction of nature.

Millions of people take part in Earth Hour in the UK every year, joining many more around the world. The world’s biggest landmarks, including the Empire State Building, Eiffel Tower and Buckingham Palace, switch off lights as a visual display of their commitment to our planet.
