Llanelli’s MP & AM push Council on parking restrictions

Llanelli’s MP and AM met with Carmarthenshire County Council to make the case against the planned expansion of parking charges at country and beach access points.

At the meeting last Friday (the 15th of March), they pressed the Council’s Executive Board member for Culture, Sport and Tourism and officers on the double yellow lines painted on roads around Pembrey Country Park and plans for pay-and-display at spots used by locals to access the beach.

Nia Griffith MP explained:

“Local residents were shocked to see the splattering of yellow lines on the approach roads to the Burrows, or Fisherman’s, “car-park” just outside Pembrey Country Park last year, and there is real concern about any plans for pay and display car parking.

“Lee and I made this clear to the County Council officers and Cllr Peter Hughes-Griffiths, the Executive Board member responsible for these plans, and asked them to take the views of the public into consideration. We also stressed the anger about the proposed charges on other coast and country car-parks, and the very negative impact it would have on local residents.

“In response to the officers, we pointed out the importance of access to the beach and the nature reserves, and that it is the regular users who help maintain these areas through litter picks, reporting problems, etc. Lee and I will keep up pressure on the Council to recognise this.”

Lee Waters AM added:

“Nia and I wanted to make sure that local decision makers heard what local people think about the arbitrary decision to paint bright yellow lines down a quiet road and all over an informal car park that has been used by generations of people from the area to access the beach and countryside in Pembrey.”

“We made a series of practical suggestions to try and find a way forward and we look forward to hearing back from the Carmarthenshire Councillors on the Executive Board on their decisions.”
