Question Time event held for young people in NPT/Cynnal digwyddiad Hawl i Holi ar gyfer pobl ifanc yng Nghastell-nedd Port Talbot

Students from NPTC Group of Colleges recently had the opportunity to quiz local politicians in a ‘Question Time’ event designed to encourage participation amongst young people in the issues which affect them.

The discussion, which was held last week at Neath College’s Nidum Arts Centre and was chaired by Mayor of Neath Port Talbot Cllr. Dennis Keogh, saw a panel of nine local politicians answer a series of questions which had been put forward by students of the college.

The event was organised in response to recent proposals to lower the voting age to 16 for National Assembly of Wales elections and thisissue, as well as how young people can make informed choices when voting, was one of the topics discussed.

Other subjects raised for discussion by students included the accusations of anti-Semitism within the Labour Party; employment issues such as the impact of zero hours contracts and age being a factor in rates of pay; and whether the system of universal student grants should be brought back.

On the panel were Stephen Kinnock, Labour MP for Aberavon; David Rees, Labour AM for Aberavon; Jeremy Miles, Labour AM for Neath; Bethan Sayed, Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales West; Suzy Davies, Conservative AM for South Wales West; Anthony Taylor, Deputy Leader of Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council and Labour Councillor for Taibach; Alun Llewelyn, Plaid Cymru Councillor for Ystalyfera and Leader of Plaid in Neath Port Talbot; Steve Hunt, Independent Councillor for Seven Sisters and Leader of Independent Democrats in Neath Port Talbot; and Sheila Kingston-Jones, lead South West Wales regional list candidate for the Liberal Democrats at the next Welsh Assembly elections.

Mayor of Neath Port Talbot Cllr Dennis Keogh said:“I was delighted, in my role as first citizen, to be able to initiate this event which was designed to engage local young people in the democratic process. It is crucial that young people feel empowered and that they have a say in the issues that matter to them and I would like to thank our audience and panel membersfor theircontributions.This will hopefully be the first of many such events”.

Cynnal digwyddiad Hawl i Holi ar gyfer pobl ifanc yng Nghastell-nedd Port Talbot

Cafodd myfyrwyr Grŵp Colegau CNPT gyfle’n ddiweddar i holi gwleidyddion lleol mewn digwyddiad ‘Hawl i Holi a ddyluniwyd i annog pobl ifanc i gymryd rhan yn y materion sy’n effeithio arnynt.

Maer Castell-nedd Port Talbot, y Cynghorydd Dennis Keogh, oedd yn cadeirio’r drafodaeth a gynhaliwyd yr wythnos diwethaf yng Nghanolfan Gelf Nidum Coleg Castell-nedd, lle’r oedd panel o naw gwleidydd lleol yn bresennol i ateb cyfres o gwestiynau a gyflwynwyd gan fyfyrwyr y coleg.

Trefnwyd y digwyddiad mewn ymateb i gynigion diweddar i leihau’r oed pleidleisio i 16 oed ar gyfer etholiadau Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru a thrafodwyd y mater hwn, yn ogystal â sut y gall pobl ifanc wneud dewisiadau gwybodus wrth bleidleisio.

Roedd pynciau eraill a drafodwyd gan y myfyrwyr yn cynnwys cyhuddiadau o wrth-Semitiaeth yn y Blaid Lafur; materion cyflogaeth megis effaith contractau dim oriau a bod oedran yn ffactor wrth ystyried cyfraddau tâl; yn ogystal ag a ddylid ailgyflwyno system o grantiau cynhwysol i fyfyrwyr.

Dywedodd Maer Castell-nedd Port Talbot, y Cynghorydd Dennis Keogh, “Roeddwn wrth fy modd, yn fy rôl fel prif ddinesydd, i allu cynnal y digwyddiad hwn ar gyfer cynnwys pobl ifanc yn y broses ddemocrataidd.Mae’n hanfodol bod pobl ifanc yn teimlo eu bod wedi’u grymuso a bod ganddynt gyfle i ddweud eu dweud ynghylch y materion sy’n bwysig iddynt a hoffwn ddiolch i’n cynulleidfa ac aelodau’r panel am eu cyfraniadau.Rwy’n gobeithio y bydd mwy o ddigwyddiadau fel hyn.”

“Hoffwn hefyd ddiolch i staff a myfyrwyr Grŵp CNPT a fu’n gweithio y tu ôl i’r llenni am eu cefnogaeth wrth hwyluso a chynnal y digwyddiad hwn ac am sicrhau ei fod yn llwyddiant.”
