Lee Waters AM has congratulated Llanelli’s Professor Sir Deian Hopkin on winning the First Ministers Special Award at the annual St David’s Awards. Professor Sir Deian Hopkin received the award for his work in coordinating Wales’ commemorations of the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Lee Waters AM said:
“Wales’ memorial of the end of World War 1 was long in the making. Sir Hopkin was absolutely key to the organisation effort, and he ensured we remember the sacrifices of our forebears with dignity and respect.”
“I’m also pleased that the successes of one of Llanelli’s most successful sons have been recognised. Over his distinguished career Sir Hopkin has made a huge contribution to our understanding of the past, and the future of our young people through his teaching.”
Born and educated in Llanelli, where he attended Ysgol Dewi Sant. Sir Deian Hopkin was Head of History at Aberystwyth University. From 2001 until his retirement in 2009, he was Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of London South Bank University.
He is a distinguished historian and served as President of the National Library of Wales until 2016.
The annual St David’s Awards are designed to celebrate outstanding contributions to Welsh life, and the First Minister’s Special Award is the personal gift of the First Minister.
Previous winners of the prestigious award include Gerald Williams MBE, Sir Karl Jenkins & Dr Mererid Hopwood, Nigel Owens, and the community of Machynlleth.
