Plaid Cymru Mid and West AM Helen Mary Jones has organised a meeting in Llanelli this Friday evening 5.30pm – 7.30pm in the Selwyn Samuel Centre (12 April 2019) to give advice about changes to women’s pensions.
The Pensions Act 1995 provided for the State Pension age for women to increase from 60 to 65 over the period April 2010 to 2020. The Westminster Coalition Government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats accelerated the latter part of this timetable, starting in April 2016 when women’s State Pension Age was 63 so that it will now reach 65 in November 2018. The equalised State Pension age will then rise to 66 by October 2020.
Some women born in the 1950s argue they have been hit particularly hard, with significant changes to their State Pension age imposed with a lack of appropriate notification.
Mid and West AM Plaid Cymru Helen Mary Jones said:
“Many women took early retirement, leaving them with lower-than-expected incomes.
The campaign Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) is calling for “fair transitional state pension arrangements,” which they say translates into a ‘bridging pension’ paid from age 60 to the State Pension age.
“International observers like the United Nations Special Rapporteur Philip Alston commented on the impact of the changes to the pension age on a group of women born in the 1950s who had been “ill-prepared” to adjust.
“It is estimated these changes impact 29,400 women in my Mid and West region.”
- The meeting will be held at 5.30pm – 7.30pm 12 April at the Selwyn Samuel Centre, Park Crescent, Llanelli, SA15 3DD.
There is no need for an appointment.
