Pressure ulcers can be extremely upsetting for patients but staff on a busy trauma ward at Glangwili General Hospital are celebrating excellent progress this year by achieving over 100 days without hospital-acquired pressure damage.
The team has invested in special training, working in collaboration with our Tissue Viability Team, Quality Improvement Team and Practice Development Nurse to ensure pressure damage prevention is a top priority, with no pressure ulcers being reported in 120 days – and counting!
The ward has also undertaken a trial on special new ‘Hybrid Mattresses.’ The mattresses are combination of both foam and air and designed for individuals at risk of developing pressure damage. Patients and staff have both responded positively to the mattresses and a number have been purchased for Teifi Ward as a result.
James Sheldon, Senior Nurse Manager for Trauma and Surgery at Hywel Dda, said: “For some wards this may not be so unusual, but we’ve been kept very busy on Teifi Ward which regularly comes up at our pressure damage scrutiny meetings.
“It was only when I checked that I found out the last time Teifi Ward had a pressure damage-free month was in 2015 – and now we’ve had three months in a row and counting.
“I am extremely proud of the ward team and am confident they will continue to sustain this excellent progress in reducing avoidable hospital-acquired pressure damage.”

Gall briwiau pwyso beri gofid mawr i gleifion, ond mae’r staff ar ward drawma brysur yn Ysbyty Cyffredinol Glangwili yn dathlu cynnydd rhagorol eleni trwy gyflawni 100 o ddiwrnodau heb unrhyw niwed pwysau a gafwyd yn yr ysbyty.
Mae’r tîm wedi buddsoddi mewn hyfforddiant arbennig, gan gydweithio â’n Tîm Hyfywedd Meinweoedd, ein Tîm Gwella Ansawdd a Nyrs Datblygu Ymarfer i sicrhau bod y gwaith o atal niwed pwysau yn brif flaenoriaeth, ac ni adroddwyd am unrhyw friwiau pwyso mewn 120 o ddiwrnodau – ac rydym yn dal i gyfri!
Mae’r ward hefyd wedi ymgymryd â threial ar ‘Fatresi Hybrid’ newydd. Mae’r matresi yn gyfuniad o ewyn ac aer, ac wedi’u dylunio ar gyfer unigolion sydd mewn perygl o ddatblygu niwed pwysau. Mae’r cleifion a’r staff, fel ei gilydd, wedi ymateb yn gadarnhaol i’r matresi ac, o ganlyniad, mae nifer wedi cael eu prynu ar gyfer Ward Teifi.
Dywedodd James Sheldon, Uwch-reolwr Nyrsio ar gyfer Trawma a Llawfeddygaeth yn Hywel Dda: “Yn achos rhai wardiau, efallai nad yw hyn mor anarferol, ond rydym wedi bod yn brysur iawn ar Ward Teifi, sy’n aml yn cael ei chrybwyll yn ein cyfarfodydd i graffu ar niwed pwyso.
“Dim ond pan euthum ati i wirio y bu i mi ddarganfod mai’r tro diwethaf i Ward Teifi gael mis yn rhydd o niwed pwysau oedd yn 2015 – a bellach rydym wedi cael tri mis yn olynol.
“Rwy’n hynod o falch o dîm y ward, ac yn hyderus y bydd yn parhau i gynnal y cynnydd rhagorol hwn o ran lleihau niwed pwyso a geir yn yr ysbyty ac y gellir ei osgoi.”
