Expert tuition and professional support close to home could be just the way to launch a new career in healthcare.

Staff from Swansea University are heading to West Wales to share details of its award-winning adult nursing programme as well as other training opportunities offered by the College of Human and Health Sciences.

Two special open days next month will provide the chance to meet staff who still work in practice as well as hearing from current students about their experience of studying at Swansea University – especially at its satellite campus in Carmarthen.

For Hanna Davies, from CapelDewi Aberystwyth, attending lectures so much closer to home meant she was able to share lifts, helping her to cut costs as she fulfilled her childhood dream.

“When I was a little girl my granddad had cancer and he always told my mum that one day I would make a good nurse and that inspired me to study a nursing degree,” she said.

Hanna, who had worked as a carer, admits she found some aspects of the course daunting.

“On my first day of placement I was terrified to enter the ward, but the staff were so kind and welcoming they made my four weeks fly by.

“On your placement you get to meet different people and learn new experiences and skills. All the staff are lovely and willing to help and answer any questions.”

Hanna added that the University’s academic support service and librarians were always on hand when it came to preparing assignments.

“Everyone has times when the think they can’t do it anymore, but every step of the course is definitely worth it,” she added.

A passion for helping people and the opportunity to study through the medium of Welsh meant adult nursing at Swansea University was the perfect choice for Elen Martin.

Coming from Carmarthen, Elen(left)was delighted the course would not only allow her to train at on her own doorstep at the University’s St David’s Park campus in the town but also on the wards of Glangwili Hospital.

She said: “On the open day I attended I could see it would be the perfect university for me – it seemed very friendly and welcoming.

“I never thought I would be studying at degree level! My favourite part is definitely the variety of theory and practical.”

Elen added: “As a Welsh speaker I couldn’t ask for better support from the university regarding studying in my first language. My personal tutor has always supported my needs and provided me with resources.”

The first open day takes place on Wednesday, May 1 at Aberystwyth Park Lodge Hotel from 1pm to 6.30pm. Book your place here

The second takes place at Swansea University’s St David’s Park complex in Carmarthen on Wednesday, May 15 from 4pm to 7pm.
