The Chief Officer of the Dyfed-Powys Police Special Constabulary has been awarded for his contribution to the LGBT community and wider policing at a ceremony in Carmarthen.

The announcement was made in the New Year Honours list and today (Tuesday, 30 April 2019), Special Chief Officer, Cairn Newton-Evans, received his British Empire Medal (BEM) from HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Sara Edwards.

The BEM is awarded by the British Crown to those who give a hands-on service to their local community, and recognises his contribution to both the LGBT and wider communities over ten years of police service.

Cairn joined Dyfed-Powys Police in 2009, after recovering from a homophobic attack that left him fearing for his life. He has used his position, and the platform he has gained, to advocate for the rights of the LGBT community and improve the way police support victims of hate crime.

He said: “Receiving the British Empire Medal from HM Lord Lieutenant this afternoon, in the presence of my family, friends and colleagues is truly one of the proudest days of my life.

“Volunteering with Dyfed-Powys Police as a member of the Special Constabulary has allowed me to develop my own skills, academically and professionally, whilst ensuring I get to help others.

“Leading the Special Constabulary as Chief Officer is an absolute honour, and I look forward to continuing my journey within Dyfed-Powys Police.

“This medal highlights the dedication and professionalism of volunteers across Wales.”

Cairn has risen through the ranks, volunteering over 4500 hours of his time to policing. Alongside this role, which sees him leading a team of 100, he teaches in the Public Services and Policing department at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable, Claire Parmenter, said: “We are all busy people but Cairn manages to pack more in to a week than anyone I know. His policing role is a challenging one and he has performed it while balancing studies and a day job.

“He has shared his experiences on national television and in professional forums and it is pleasing he has seen the service we provide to LGBT communities improve as a result of his interventions.

“It has been my pleasure to see him develop and flourish as a leader. Cairn is a true role model for young people and the LGBT community.

“On behalf of the whole force I congratulate him on his professionalism and commitment, and thank him for his dedication to Dyfed-Powys Police and the communities we serve.”
