Drone operators are being urged to avoid disturbing protected wildlife following a recent incident that was reported in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

A drone was spotted flying above Stack Rocks near Castlemartin at a time of year when protected seabirds such as guillemots and razorbills come ashore to nest.

National Park Authority Ranger for the Castlemartin Range, Lynne Houlston said: “Birds are particularly sensitive to disturbance during the nesting season and in this case the stacks were covered in thousands of seabirds, precariously perched with eggs on their feet.

“The cliffs around Stack Rocks also provide nesting sites for kittiwakes, chough, gulls, fulmar and raven. Ravens can start nesting as early as March. From mid-August to November seal pups are born within these caves and bays and these are also protected by law from disturbance.

“As well as putting wildlife at risk, the operator of this drone and was also flying in military airspace linked to the MOD’s Castlemartin Range without permission.

“The police have been informed and have been given the details of those who are alleged to have been operating the drone.

“If you would like to take a closer look at the birds and their chicks, the National Park Authority has arranged a free drop-in event at Stack Rocks from 10am-3pm on Saturday 22 June.”

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and a range of partners have developed guidance for drone operators, highlighting the issues of disturbance to wildlife. As well as seabirds, the advice also describes the impact drones can have on seals, wading birds, waterfowl and livestock.

Disturbance of wildlife is a crime and can be prosecuted under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Reports of drone misuse should be reported to the police by calling 101.

Achos honedig o gamddefnyddio drôn yn Staiciau’r Heligog yn cael ei riportio i’r Heddlu

Mae gweithredwyr dronau yn cael eu hannog i osgoi aflonyddu ar fywyd gwyllt gwarchodedig yn dilyn digwyddiad diweddar a riportiwyd ym Mharc Cenedlaethol Arfordir Penfro.

Gwelwyd drôn yn hedfan uwchben Staiciau’r Heligog wrth ymyl Castellmartin ar adeg o’r flwyddyn pan oedd adar y môr fel gwylogod a llursod yn dod i’r lan i nythu.

Dywedodd Lynne Houlston, Parcmon Awdurdod y Parc Cenedlaethol ar gyfer Maes Tanio Castellmartin:  “Mae adar yn arbennig o sensitif i aflonyddu yn ystod y cyfnod nythu, ac yn yr achos hwn, roedd y creigiau wedi’u gorchuddio gan filoedd o adar môr, a oedd yn eistedd yn ansicr gydag wyau wrth eu traed.

“Mae’r clogwyni o gwmpas Staiciau’r Heligog yn darparu safleoedd nythu hefyd ar gyfer gwylanod coesddu, brain coesgoch, gwylanod cyffredin, adar drycin y graig a chigfrain.  Gall cigfrain ddechrau nythu mor gynnar â mis Mawrth. O ganol fis Awst tan fis Tachwedd, mae morloi bach yn cael eu geni yn yr ogofeydd a’r baeau hyn ac mae’r rhain hefyd yn cael eu gwarchod gan y gyfraith rhag cael eu haflonyddu.

“Yn ogystal â rhoi bywyd gwyllt mewn risg, roedd gweithredwr y drôn hwn hefyd yn hedfan heb ganiatâd mewn awyrofod milwrol sy’n gysylltiedig â Maes Tanio’r Weinyddiaeth Amddiffyn yng Nghastellmartin.

“Hysbyswyd yr Heddlu ac maen nhw wedi derbyn manylion y rhai hynny sydd yn honedig wedi bod yn gweithredu’r drôn.”

“Os hoffech chi gymryd golwg agosach ar yr adar a’u cywion, mae Awdurdod y Parc Cenedlaethol wedi trefnu digwyddiad galw i mewn yn Staiciau’r Heligog rhwng 10am a 3pm ddydd Sadwrn, 22ain Mehefin.”

Mae Awdurdod Cenedlaethol Arfordir Penfro ac amrediad o bartneriaid wedi datblygu canllawiau ar gyfer gweithredwyr dronau, gan dynnu sylw at y problemau o aflonyddu ar fywyd gwyllt. Yn ogystal â’r effaith ar adar môr, mae’r cyngor hefyd yn disgrifio effaith y dronau ar forloi, rhydwyr, adar dŵr a da byw.

Mae aflonyddu ar fywyd gwyllt yn drosedd a gellir ei herlyn o dan Ddeddf Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad 1981. Dylid riportio unrhyw achosion o gamddefnyddio dronau i’r heddlu drwy ffonio 101.
