Welsh Labour Councillors in Carmarthenshire have welcomed the decision by the Welsh Government to lift the block on planning approval for the building of the Llanelli Life Science and Wellbeing Village.
The £200m City Deal project that was approved by the Authority’s Planning Committee earlier this year had received a stop notice by the Welsh Government after concerns were raised that insufficient evidence had been published on the environmental impact of the development.
In response to the Welsh Government intervention, Carmarthenshire Council are complying with dozens of planning conditions recommended by Natural Resources Wales that will safeguard the wildlife and natural environment in the area.
An urgent motion has been submitted by Welsh Labour Councillors to Council welcoming the news and calling for the immediate submission of the business case to the Joint Committee of the Swansea Bay City Deal.
Carmarthenshire Labour Leader, Cllr Rob James, stated “We are extremely pleased that the stop notice for the City Deal project has been lifted after our discussions with Welsh Government.
“Throughout this process Welsh Labour Councillors have been keen to ensure that public money is being spent appropriately, whilst supporting this much needed investment in the region. We are pleased that all of the planning conditions recommended by Natural Resources Wales are being addressed by the local authority, as it is extremely important that we safeguard the natural environment and wildlife in the area.
“We now expect the administration to submit the amended business case to the Joint Committee for approval immediately, so that we can start delivering on the promises made in the Swansea Bay City Deal.”
Local Glanymor Councillor, John Prosser, added “I am pleased that our lobbying of the Welsh Government has resulted in the stop notice being lifted.
“We have always supported this project and it’s important we get it, as will never again have this opportunity to transform this area.”
