- Cool down your clothes wash; around 90% of a washing machine’s energy expenditure is spent on heating the water, so the lower the temperature, the more you save. Try washing your clothes on a 30-40°C wash rather than at 60°C.
- Lower the pressure; a high-pressure power shower is a great luxury to have but you’d be surprised how much hot water they can use – sometimes even more than a bath.
- Switch it off; switching to standby is better than leaving your TV on, but it’s still more energy efficient to turn your appliances and devices off completely at the plug when they aren’t in use.
- Invest cheaply in energy saving; lighting can account for as much as 20% of your electricity bill. LED bulbs are the most energy efficient – they use up to 90% less energy and can last up to 50,000 hours (that’s over five and a half years if left on continuously).
- Summer saving; as the weather heats up, turn your thermostat down. Doing this by just 1 degree Celsius can save you as much as £75 per year. The money you save can help towards your bills in the colder winter months.
- Bleed your radiators; this releases any gas caught inside them, making them run more efficiently.
- Use draught excluders; by using draught excluders at the bottom of doors and windows, you will help prevent heat loss.
