Lovell Homes’ popular The Mill development in Canton, Cardiff, has been named as the Residential Development of the Year at Insider’s Wales Property Awards.

The project was nominated by Powell Dobson Architects, who designed The Mill, which has successfully transformed the former paper mill into a thriving and sustainable residential community which willprovide800 homes across the 53-acre site.

The Mill, which is a partnership between Lovell Homes, Tirion Homes, Principality Building Society and Cadwyn Housing Association, has provided opportunity for growth for the local construction industry through Lovell’s commitment to giving back local resources.

James Duffett, regional managing director at Lovell Homes South Wales and South West said: “We are thrilled to be awarded this title. We can’t thank our dedicated team enough for their continued enthusiasm and hard-work throughout this project.

“We are delighted that all of our effort and dedication is being recognised and we cannot wait to see what the future holds for The Mill.

“Lovell Homes is also proud to have worked in partnership with other incredible partners to see this achievement come to life. We hope to continue to flourish alongside them and continue to work towards a common goal.”

David Ward, CEO at Tirion, said: “We are thrilled to have won this prestigious award and truly hope people will feel able to set down roots in our new community.

“It has been a long and sometimes challenging road to get to this point and we are grateful for the commitment shown by our partnership with Principality Building Society, Welsh Government, Cadwyn and Lovell in bringing the project to fruition.”

Ian Bailey, head of housing strategy at Principality, said: “Collaboration and partnership were key words from the Welsh Government’s Affordable Housing Review and there can be few better examples of this across Wales. We are so pleased to have been able to play a key part in the regeneration of one of the largest brownfield sites in Cardiff into high quality homes. Many of these homes will be available as affordable rentals, which will ultimately form part of a vibrant community.”

Cadwyn’s chief executive, Kath Palmer, said: “We’re delighted that The Mill has won this award. It encapsulates everything we set out to achieve; desirable homes and a vibrant, thriving community. With lots more to come at The Mill, the future is looking really exciting!”

Bernadette Kinsella, director at Powell Dobson Architects, said: “It is fantastic to see that The Mill has been recognised by this award, and particularly rewarding to see the response to the design of the individual homes.

“The team worked hard to design liveable, flexible and sustainable homes that deliver the best of Development Quality Requirements space standards within a more efficient footprint. This has enabled more homes to be provided than would otherwise have been possible.”

Current availability at The Mill includes one-bedroom apartments priced from £142,995, two-bedroom apartments priced from £183,995, two-bedroom homes priced from £212,995, three-bedroom homes priced from £290,000 and four-bedroom homes priced from £319,995.
