Andrew Lye, Chair of Pembrokeshire Liberal Democrats said “I am appalled that from a Government 3 years ago said we were going to get a great deal and that the EU needed us more that we need them, we have reached the position of the Prime Minister asking the Queen to prorogue Parliament as the EU isn’t giving us what we want, so we will suspend Parliament. This is a diabolical abuse of power at a time that the UK has faced in peace time. At no time during the EU referendum was a No Deal Brexit proposed and that was not what Leave voters voted for. They said that they wanted power returned to Parliament, yet they are now proposing to suspend Parliament for a month”.

Andrew Lye continued. “For years, I have said that the country has been split for the first time since the period of the Civil War in the 1640’s  when you were either for the Crown or Parliament. Now we have a Prime Minister who is determined to subvert Parliament from doing their job for a one period as we approach the crashing out of the EU with no deal. Is this what you expect of a democracy. To me, it just shows that we have an autocratic Government bringing the Queen into the Brexit debacle. I hope that MP’s are able to unite and take action before Parliament is prorogued.

“Boris Johnson and his Government may be happy to jump over the cliff on 31st October, but a No Deal Brexit will have a severe effect on the UK and will affect those on low incomes, most, and hit the economy hard, as well as those relying on medicines. Boris is only taking this action to get the result he wants, regardless of the effects on the most vulnerable”, said Andrew Lye.
