Rob Williams, director of NAHT Cymru, said: “There is still a lack of detail regarding any consequential school funding coming to Wales as a result of the £7 billion promised by the government in England. However, it is critical that whatever additional money does arrive into Welsh budgets it must immediately be allocated directly to schools.

“More specifically, there needs to be clear detail provided to schools, parents and families explaining what recent announcements mean in monetary terms per pupil in Wales and the process by which it will be ring-fenced and protected for education use. The recent report by the Welsh Assembly’s Children, Young People and Education committee published in July was unequivocal in acknowledging the insufficiency in school budgets in Wales and in the need to address the impact cuts have had on the education of all pupils.

“If this money is not ring-fenced for schools, there is a risk that it will simply be absorbed into areas not specifically supporting children and young people. Welsh Government must now show that they are serious about investing in the future of Wales and that means equipping schools to support all pupils in reaching their true potential.”
