19.06.19 - WRU Specsavers partnership announcement

Specsavers have extended their sporting partnerships with the announcement of a multi-year collaboration with The Welsh Rugby Football Union, coming on board as official partner.

To mark the announcement of the exciting new partnership, Leigh Halfpenny, Rhys Patchelland, Gareth Anscombe have had their eyes and ears tested by Specsavers and are encouraging rugby fans across Wales to do the same.

For Halfpenny, having his eyes tested and subsequent contact lenses, changed his rugby game for the better, he said:

“I think people would be surprised by how many rugby players actually do wear contact lenses – they perhaps don’t wear glasses daily, but certainly when they play, they see the benefit of it. I’ve worn glasses since I was a kid; I wear contact lenses for training and playing [matches] – I wouldn’t be able to play without them. I hope that this partnership helps to raise the profile of eye health and more people go and get their eyes checked.”

Recognising the importance of good eye health, Patchellsaid:

“It is not just getting your eyes checked in terms of being able to see what is in front of you – there are a lot of people who across the country who have a lot of health scares to do with their eyes, and until you get it checked you don’t know what you don’t know, so it is important that you come and get checked on a regular basis.”

For Anscombe, he hopes more people will now book a free eye test with Specsavers, he said:

“I haven’t had my eyes tested for about 10 years, so the new partnership with Specsavers has been a really good opportunity for me to come and get checked out. I hope more people will now do the same.”

Principality Building Society Premiership begins7 September 2019.

Specsavers are The Official Optician and Audiologist of The Welsh Rugby Football Union.

James Deavall, Director at Specsavers Queen Street, added:

“The importance of eye and ear health should not be underestimated, and this is especially true for professional sportspeople.

“Rhys, Leigh and Gareth are all rugby superstars, but they wouldn’t be able to compete at the level they do without looking after every aspect of their health. “We’re happy to see they are taking their sight and hearing seriously following their visit to our store and hope that this encourages everyone to follow suit and book in for their eye and ear test.”
