The force’s first cohort of police officers who joined under the new Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF) attended their passing out ceremony on Friday 13th Sept. This is a new professional framework introduced nationally for the training of police officers.

After completing 26 weeks initial training at the Learning and Development Centre in Bridgend, 75 officers will now work to complete the remainder of their probation (two and a half years via the Apprenticeship and one and a half years as a previous degree holder) within the community.

Eight additional officers who joined through the National ‘Police Now’ Graduate Leadership Programme, will also be joining our Neighbourhood teams across the force, working to develop innovative ideas and techniques to tackle some of the most difficult quality of life issues.

Chief Constable Matt Jukes said:

“This is the very first cohort of new police officer to have joined us through these new recruitment routes. Following today’s ceremony they will all find themselves based across the force area which is where their policing journey will truly begin.

It is a real honour to be able to welcome them to the force today.

In the months and years to come, these officers will face challenges every day. The threats and level of the demand that we deal with as a service have never been greater or more complex, but despite that, these men and women have signed up and made a promise to serve the public and to keep our communities safe.

We, along with their family and friends are very proud of what they have achieved so far and I would like to wish them every success for the future as they continue their careers with us.”

Bronwen Williams Academic Director for UWTSD Swansea Campus said:

“I am very proud to be representing UWTSD to congratulate the first cohort to go through the new PEQF route.  It has been a really challenge to merge the two worlds of academia and frontline policing and training, but I think this has been achieved by the excellent team work and collaboration that makes up the partnership between South Wales Police, Gwent Police and UWTSD.

This first cohort has been instrumental in that development and their feedback has been invaluable.  As we move forward into the next part of their learning and training, the University will be there to support and guide them and we look forward to welcoming them once again as a full cohort when they graduate with us in July 2012 and 2022.  We wish them all the best in this new phase of their careers and look forward to seeing them succeed and go far”.

If you are interested in becoming a police officer you can find all the information you need to know on our website.  Our next recruitment drive opens October 1st.
