People’s Postcode Lottery winner Jane Turnbull-O’Connor, who won £30,000 in January, has been surprised by a second knock at the door.

But this time the television presenter and Postcode Lottery ambassador, Matt Johnson, arrived at Jane’s home in Rhos to deliver a special video message all the way from Mozambique.

The message was sent by an elderly couple, Gordane and Suhura, who were able to have cataract surgery thanks to funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Gordane and Suhura have been married for more than 40 years. But the couple had tragically been left unable to see each other properly due to their failing eyesight.

The video message was recorded by the charity, Sightsavers, which has received more than £3 million pounds from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The funds enable Sightsavers teams working in some of the world’s poorest countries to treat conditions which can cause blindness.

The Sightsavers film follows Gordane and Suhura as they head to hospital and captures the emotional moment when Suhura is able to see her husband for the first time in years. Later, the couple personally thank Jane for supporting the charity.

Cataract surgery is a straightforward procedure and is commonplace in the UK. But in Mozambique, older people affected by cataracts may lose their vision due to a lack of medical facilities. It is estimated that 75% of cases of blindness in the country could be successfully treated or prevented entirely. Cataract surgery costs only £50.

Jane Turnbull-O’Connor said: “I was naturally delighted when Matt first arrived on my doorstep with a cheque for £30,000 to tell me I was a winner, but it was just as fantastic to see him again and hear more about the work players of People’s Postcode Lottery like me help fund in Mozambique.

“Gordane and Suhura are so obviously in love and it was wonderful to watch as Gordane realises Suhara can see him again for the first time in years.”

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador, Matt Johnson, said: “The film of Gordane and Suhura seeing each other again is incredibly moving and I have a lump in my throat each time I watch it.

“It was such a pleasure to show the video to Jane and talk to her about the amazing work charities like Sightsavers can do thanks to players’ support.

“People’s Postcode Lottery was created to raise money for good causes and that means charities win as well as players like Jane.”

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have already raised more than £474 million for good causes across Britain and beyond.
