Paul Thompson the British Red Cross’ Director of Retail and Community Fundraising has paid tribute to the charity’s thousands of retail volunteers. The humanitarian organisation has launched a recruitment drive to encourage members of the public to sign up for a few hours weekly volunteering in their local shop. He said:

“We have one of the largest volunteer retail teams in the UK, and an amazing network of 330 shops in every corner of the UK. Our volunteers freely give an amazing 1.2 million hours of their time to us – how’s that for the power of kindness!’

‘As well as contributing towards raising an incredible £30m a year to help people in crisis, our shops help to divert tonnes of textiles from landfill every year.”

‘But above and beyond the commercial value they deliver, our shops provide a vital service in so many other ways. They’re more than just shops – they’re friendly places, little communities within a community, where everyone gets a kind word and a warm welcome. They’re just priceless.”

Shop manager Natalie Roche in Aberdare is hoping to recruit several new volunteers to join the team. As well as raising money for a great cause, volunteering in a shop boosts confidence, brings people together and teaches you a whole host of valuable skills.

“We’d love to welcome more people to join us. Even an hour a day from volunteers would be much appreciated, however often they can spare it, for however long. Whether you love a good chat, are passionate about the environment, or have a keen eye for style – there’s a role to suit you in your local shop.”

Mike first started volunteering for the Red Cross shop in Aberdare a few days a week after becoming unemployed. He said:

“I was on a course in Merthyr Tydfil and they try to get you placements, voluntary to start with. Within two or three weeks of being on the course, I saw this advertised and volunteered. I started off by doing two – three days a week. I like it so much that I often do extra shifts.”

Mike enjoys volunteering and works mainly on the till.  He said:

“I used to have my own shop, so I’m used to chatting with people and bantering. I enjoy meeting people and this is the ideal place for it.”
