Event organisers have come out in force to make this year’s Mayor of Neath Port Talbot’s Armed Forces Festival a County Borough-wide experience.

The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Scott Jones explained:

“Earlier in the year we put out a call for events to affiliate with us so that we could extend the Festival to more places across the county borough and run it over a longer period of time.

“We have been delighted with the response and I would like to thank all of the event organisers who have come forward in different parts of Neath Port Talbot.

“The full and varied programme for 2019 goes to show how much more we can achieve when we all work together and it means the Armed Forces Festival is now an umbrella event for the various activities throughout the County Borough.”

The Festival runs from Monday 28 October to Monday 11 November, and is supported by The Wave, Swansea Sound and Port Talbot’s Aberafan Shopping Centre.

Two core events, which proved popular in 2018, are set to return this year. The Festival Concert will take place on Friday 1 November at the Princess Royal Theatre and there will be displays and exhibitions on Saturday 2 November, but these take place indoors in the Aberafan Shopping Centre.

There will be public Remembrance events at Neath, Port Talbot, Pontardawe and Briton Ferry, to ensure the sacrifices of those who served are never forgotten.

New events joining the Festival this year include a 1940s tea party, the Port Talbot Farmers’ Market, the Poppy Bridge Project at Jersey Park in Briton Ferry and a display by Skewen Historical Society in Neath Civic Centre.

Baglan, Glynneath, Neath, Pontardawe and Port Talbot Libraries will also be running a range of events as part of the Festival. These will include poppy craft sessions, World War 1 Displays and talks on topics such as ‘remembrance’ and ‘Pontardawe at War’.

If you’re involved in an organisation that’s holding an event in Neath Port Talbot between 28 October and 11 November and would like to affiliate with the Festival, there’s still time. Please contact Grace Halfpenny at g.c.halfpenny@npt.gov.uk for more information.
