Welsh Star Offers Apology To Tottenham Fans

After suffering defeat in June’s Champions League final, there was always a question following Tottenham for the rest of the Summer. One that asked, just how would the club deal with such huge disappointment?

One the one hand, the North London outfit could have used it as a springboard for bigger and better things – such has how Liverpool turned their own European misery into glory, within the space of just twelve months.

While on the other, there was always the danger of getting so close to the summit without scaling it, was then going to start a negative tailspin within the club and on the evidence of recent results, you would have to say it has been the latter of the two.

The start to this season has been one that has seen Mauricio Pochettino’s men struggle to display their usual swagger and this was no less evident than in their Carabao Cup showing against Colchester.

An embarrassing penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of the League Two outfit has only added to the early pressure that is being heaped on the shoulders of the Argentine manager and although he will ultimately have to take the blame, one of his players has been quick to apologise for the loss.

Welsh international Ben Davies said after the game:

It’s horrible – it’s a trophy, a good chance to pick something up and we’ve let it slip at the first hurdle,

“The manager didn’t need to say anything afterwards. In the dressing room, we were all as disappointed as him. We let him down, we let the club down.

While although the players will be upset at not only passing up the opportunity of a trophy but also at such an early stage of the campaign, it is the fans that will feel this frustration the most and especially as another season without silverware looks likely.

Of course, this is a campaign that is still salvageable with the F.A. Cup not starting for Tottenham until January and you would have to consider this their best chance of winning a first major trophy since the 2008 League Cup success against Chelsea.

With both Liverpool and Manchester City looking a class apart on both domestic and European fronts right now, asking Tottenham to challenge for the Premier League or go one better on the continental stage, looks like being a huge ask.

That’s why Davies and the players who took to the field against Colchester, know that they have spurned a huge opportunity in their pursuit of success – a pursuit that seems to get all the more agonising with every year that passes.

At the same time the 26-year-old has a mature head on his shoulders and the time for dwelling on such a defeat has already passed. Now a bigger challenge awaits and it is one, where Tottenham need to find the lightning bolt to their season and it must be found sooner rather than later.
