RCT Young Carers Choir set for St Paul’s Cathedral performance

Action for Children’s RCT Young Carers choir, Young Carers Aloud, will sing in front of 160 guests at St Paul’s Cathedral in London on 23rd October.

Action for Children is holding its 150th birthday thanksgiving celebration with the Methodist Church at St Paul’s Cathedral and the choir has been asked to sing. Guests will include trustees, volunteers, legacy pledgers, supporters, old boys and girls, former and current staff and children’s services commissioners.

Action for Children’s RCT Young Carers project provides a range of practical support to young carers which reduces the impact of their caring role on their own childhood and adolescent development. The projects also works to raise awareness and recognition of the needs of young carers in RCT and to develop and improve services for them and their families.

Hannah, (16), young carer and choir member, said: ‘It’s such an amazing opportunity to even go to London but to perform at St Paul’s Cathedral is a once in a life time opportunity in my eyes and to be part of Action for Children’s 150th anniversary thanksgiving service is brilliant. The support I’ve had from the project has helped me with my confidence and I wouldn’t have been able to do all this without them.’

Choirmaster and young person’s practitioner for the project, Laura Jones, added: ‘The choir is a joy to work as they are so keen and sing beautifully. It’s a huge honour to be asked to sing at St Paul’s Cathedral and I know they will rise to the occasion. Everyone is really excited and they deserve this huge day out in London.’

Project coordinator, Trudy Fisher, said: ‘These young people have responsibilities and duties that many people would find hard to imagine. They are selfless and totally committed to their families. We are proud to support them and help them through really challenging circumstances.

‘They respond really well and singing in the choir has also helped them enormously. They’ve even written one of the songs themselves, Behind Closed Doors, reflecting the isolation young carers often feel. I’m thrilled they are going to perform at St Paul’s Cathedral at such an important celebration, it’s the least they deserve.’
