Pupils at Ysgol Dyffryn Cledlyn have embraced the census rehearsal in Ceredigion by practising their counting skills and taking part in the Let’s Count! campaign.
The school is one of 32 schools in the area that has been participating in the competition, encouraging children to count things in a 20-minute walk around their schools, while also developing school-centred maps and displays. Prizes will be awarded to the best entries, with £1,000 worth of equipment going to the winning school.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS), currently running a census rehearsal in Ceredigion, developed Let’s Count! a free education programme for primary schools to teach children about the census whilst improving their skills in a range of subjects from Maths to Geography.
Carol Davies, Headteacher at Ysgol Dyffryn Cledlyn said: “The children have enjoyed learning about counting in a variety of ways during our Let’s Count activity– and were enthusiastic about creating graphs on the computer. This was a great way of learning and sharing with their parents the importance of taking part in these historic events. The stickers were great!”
Iain Bell, deputy national statistician, said: “We hope the children of Ceredigion have enjoyed taking part in Let’s Count. The programme was designed to get kids engaged in maths and geography and also raise awareness of the census. I can’t wait to judge the entries later this year.”
All schools in Ceredigion can enter and have until Friday 1 November 2019 to get their submissions in. A census resource pack, including stickers and certificates, and all resources are available online at LetsCount.org.uk
The census rehearsal is a chance for the Office for National Statistics to test its process and systems ahead of the 2021 Census. A field force is currently out and about in Ceredigion, following up with non-responders. It’s important you fill out your census rehearsal questionnaire now.
