Local Assembly Member Lee Waters has secured new and extended services for bus passengers in Burry Port.

The AM who has campaigned for better public transport for the area has welcomed the announcement from First Cymru that they are extending the hours of services travelling to Burry Port from Llanelli from January. New buses will run from Llanelli to Burry Port at 20:45 and 22:45, giving passengers more flexibility in the evening. In addition, First will be extending the 111 service to serve Burry Port on Sundays and diverting the route to serve Park Trostre.

“Residents in Burry Port have been asking me whether the services can be extended for some time, and I’ve fed this back to First Cymru. I’m delighted they’ve listened to us.” the Llanelli AM said.

Lee Waters, who is the Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport in the Welsh Government, meets regularly with the bus company to push for a better deal for passengers right across the constituency.

“These new services serve a real need for people in Burry Port, and will allow people to access work and leisure in Llanelli more easily. ” the Llanelli AM said.

Lee Waters, who has championed the development of Swansea Bay Metro since he was elected, added:

“Ultimately the bus companies are private firms and will only run services if they think there’s a commercial case for them.  If they don’t think a route can run at a profit they rely on subsidies to keep it going. Many routes have been withdrawn or scaled back as Councils have suffered cutbacks because of the UK Government’s Austerity project.

“The Welsh Labour Government are changing the way we regulate the private industry to make sure we get the best value for the £250 Million we invest every year.

“I want to see more people using buses instead of cars, so we need to find ways to get the bus companies to run routes people want to use. It’s a real win that we’ve managed to do that in Burry Port and I’m grateful to First for agreeing.” the Welsh Labour AM said.
