Burry Port Town Band was originally founded in 1896 as the Elliots Smelting Works Band. The band grew from humble, industrial beginnings and established itself as a community favourite, playing at local fetes and marches and raising money to support both itself and worthy causes a tradition that we continue to this day.
We are committed to passing on the fantastic opportunities brass and percussion playing gives to the next generation and through our Junior Band we provide music tuition and loan instrument, free of charge to all. Our Junior Band was restarted in 2014 and is now thriving with some members already experiencing playing with the Senior Band. Lead by Dan Sturch, a recent graduate from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, the Band rehearses during term time on a Sunday from 5pm to 6pm at our Bandroom on Morlan Terrace. The more able players are also invited to stay on for the first part of Senior Band rehearsal from 6:15pm.
In 2021, we will celebrate 125 years of the original 1896 Elliots Smelting Works Band, we want to raise £1,896 to support 6 young players with instruments and tuition for 12 months to begin their life long musical journeys. Graham Howe, the Band’s Chairman added that “the Junior Band goes from strength to strength and they are busy preparing for their performance in the Christmas Concert on Friday 13th December. We are looking forward to a new cohort of brass and percussion learners in the New Year, and with the Friends of Burry Port Town Band 100 Club, this is an ideal way we can help fund instruments and music for more talented youngsters to benefit.”
