Navigating the dating scene can be challenging enough, but nowadays you even need to speak a different language in the search for love.
While ‘ghosting’, ‘catfishing’ and ‘cuffing’ have gone mainstream, experts at leading dating app happn are predicting the emergence of some new dating terms in 2020, based on common dating behaviours and pop-culture trends.
Didier Rappaport, CEO and Founder of happn explains; “If you’ve encountered dating disappointments or disasters, the way you describe the experience can sometimes help to make light of the situation. Cultural references and puns feature heavily in the terms that we predict will break through in 2020 to describe some of the dramas of finding love.”
Happn’s dating terms to look out for in 2020:
- Term: Keanu-ing (inspired by Keanu Reeve’s new unexpected girlfriend)
- Usage: “He did a total Keanu, I wouldn’t have put them together at all”
- Definition: When you get together with someone new and it’s a match that surprises people.
- Term: Jekylling
- Usage: “He seemed sweet if a little persistent. When I told him I wasn’t interested in pursuing anything with him he turned and went full Jekyll on me – he was like a whole different person”
- Definition: When someone seems nice when they first approach you but once they have been rejected, even if politely, they turn nasty and throw insults at you. This scenario can apply to conversations in person or messaging.
- Term: Flatlining
- Usage: “The conversation just went dead, totally flatlined – it was so awkward”
- Definition: When a conversation goes dead and no one knows how to resurrect it.
- Term: Paxmanning
- Usage: “She went full Paxman on me – it was an interrogation not a date!”
- Definition: People who grill you with personal questions on your first date.
- Term: Rossing
- Usage: “We were so together, but he went all Ross on me insisting we were on a break!”
- Definition: When you date someone casually or are not officially a couple, and they pull you up for seeing other people ‘We were on a break!’
- Term: Faux-nogomy
- Usage: “I found out she was more into faux-nogomy – dating several guys at once!”
- Definition: When someone pretends to the person, they are dating that they are in a monogamous relationship but in reality they are not.
- Term: Deja Eeew
- Usage: “I got total Deja Eew seeing his face again”
- Definition: The feeling of repulsion when you are browsing a dating app and come across an ex or someone you’ve dated previously.
- Term: Dogfishing
- Usage: “He dogfished me, I swear I only agreed to a date because he has a cute dog”
- Definition: When people rely on a cute animal in their profile picture to secure a date.
- Term: Elsa’d
- Usage: “It went from chatting every day to nothing, he totally Elsa’d me!”
- Definition: When someone suddenly freezes you out without explanation.
