Befriending is a listening support service offered to bereaved family members. It is personal support offered by our team of trained volunteers who are themselves bereaved parents, grandparents and other relatives.
Every bereaved family member who contacts our bereavement support line is offered to be linked with a Befriender. We know how isolating it can feel to lose a baby or young child, and sometimes speaking to someone who has been through something similar can be a comfort.
Supporting bereaved families can be a rewarding role and we are currently recruiting new Befrienders.
We are looking at widening our bereavement support services to meet the increase in demand. We would particularly welcome, and like to hear from families who have lost a baby to other causes (than SIDS) and families whose baby or young child died from a known cause or from an accidental death.
If you have been bereaved at least four years, we would love to hear from you. This is open to family members who feel ready to support others, after the death of your baby or toddler; sibling; grandchild; niece or nephew and in particular we would like to hear from grandparents and fathers.
You can download the application form from our website. You will also be expected to carry out a phone interview as part of the application process and will be given specialist training on how to offer listening support.
