Nia Griffith MP has signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment in Parliament to honour those who were murdered during the Holocaust.
Every year on 27th January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, people around the world commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. This year we mark 75 years since the liberation of the concentration camps of Europe and the end of the Second World War.
After signing the Book of Commitment, Ms Griffith commented: “It is always an honour to be able share my personal reflections on the Holocaust in the Book of Commitment.
“On Holocaust Memorial Day, it is very important that we take time out to remember the millions of Jewish people and other victims of the Nazis who lost their lives in the Holocaust. We also pay tribute to the enormous strength of those who survived this atrocity, and the inspiring work so many of them are doing to educate the next generation about it. This year I am attending a special memorial event at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
“As well as reflecting on the day itself, we must bear in mind the lessons of the Holocaust all year round. We can do this be redoubling our commitment to stand up to anti-Semitism and all other forms of racism, and making sure that we always call out prejudice whenever and wherever we find it.”
In the lead up to and on Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events are arranged by schools, faith groups and community organisations across the country. The theme for this year’s commemorations is ‘Stand Together’. Llanelli’s MP met with the Holocaust Memorial Trust ahead of the day itself and paid tribute to their work with survivors to educate young people about the Holocaust.
Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, added, “As the Holocaust moves further into history, it falls on all of us to ensure that their stories and the stories of the 6 million Jewish men, women and children brutally murdered by the Nazis, are never forgotten.
“We all have a duty to remember the Holocaust and to stand up against antisemitism and hate, now more than ever.”
