Letter to Editor – Wales equal protection vote

Dear Editor,

I am delighted that the National Assembly of Wales has voted in favour of granting children and young people equal protection from assault as adults. At NSPCC Cymru / Wales we have long campaigned for this change and we welcome this common-sense decision by Assembly Members. It’s an historic vote and remarkable achievement for Wales.

Having a criminal defence for parents who physically harm their children is outrageous and outdated and as a charity that has been committed to ensuring a legislative change happens in Wales we are thrilled it is finally happening – frankly, it’s about time.

Wales is the second UK nation to close this loophole, and this is to be celebrated as we come in line with more than 50 countries across the world. It will bring welcome clarity to the law and help us better protect children.

We thank Julie Morgan AM for putting forward this bill, and will continue to work with the Welsh Government to make sure the change is implemented, whilst enabling and supporting mothers and fathers to be the best parents they can be.
