NSPCC Cymru/Wales welcomes historic equal protection vote by The National Assembly of Wales
NSPCC Cymru/Wales issues this statement welcoming the decision this evening by The National Assembly of Wales to vote through a change in the law that will give children the same protection as adults under assault law.
NSPCC Cymru issues the following statement:
“This is a remarkable achievement which closes an outdated loophole and finally gives children in Wales the same legal protection from assault as adults.
“We have long championed this common-sense change which, thanks to this historic vote, will now deliver fairness and equality for our young people.
“NSPCC Cymru / Wales thanks Assembly Members for listening and making a decision that finally ends the legally-sanctioned physical punishment of our children.
“We will continue to work with the Welsh Government as this change is implemented and the archaic defence of reasonable punishment is ultimately consigned to history.”
Mae NSPCC Cymru yn cyhoeddi’r datganiad canlynol:
“Dyma lwyddiant nodedig sy’n cau man gwan hynafol ac o’r diwedd yn rhoi i blant yng Nghymru yr un amddiffyniad cyfreithiol rhag ymosodiad ag oedolion.
“Rydym wedi bod yn hyrwyddo’r newid synhwyrol hwn ers tro byd, a diolch i’r bleidlais hanesyddol hon, bydd bellach yn darparu tegwch a chydraddoldeb i’n pobl ifanc.
“Mae NSPCC Cymru yn diolch i Aelodau’r Cynulliad am wrando a gwneud penderfyniad sydd o’r diwedd yn rhoi terfyn ar gosb gorfforol i’n plant dan ganiatâd cyfreithiol.
“Byddwn yn parhau i weithio gyda Llywodraeth Cymru wrth i’r newid hwn gael ei roi ar waith ac wrth i’r hen amddiffyniad o gosb resymol gael ei roi dan glo am byth yng nghloriau hanes.”
