Following this story of two soldiers sent on a mission to the Western Front, under orders from one General Erinmore (Colin Firth) who must warn one Colonel MacKenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch) and prevent 1,600 men from walking into a trap set by the Germans. This haunting yet beautiful story takes us on a journey as we’ve never seen through the overwhelming odds of survival.

This film is a thrilling watch throughout the entire 119 minutes of screentime. The amount of work on this film alone deserves your attention. The story is continuous and never cuts away from a single scene, and shows a balance between the humanities of war. I have never seen camera work such as this. The story was engaging easy to follow, as it never sped up or slowed down. This film is based on the events that Director Sam Mendes heard from his Grandfather Alfred Mendes when serving on the Western Front, 1914-1918. Considering that this a war film, this really cuts down deep to the reality of the events unfolded. It not only shows us what life was actually like in the trenches, but it shows a younger generation of what life was like to go through such horrific events.

Actors, Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay, two relatively unknown actors carry this film under the direction of Sam Mendes. They are supported in this movie by International Stars, which certainly works on screen.

As for the way the cinematography was filmed, it gave me a sense of what these men experienced. It also showed us the fear and the realisation when they knew they were going to die. Chapman and MacKay showed chemistry throughout the movie, and I can predict a bright future for their careers. Sam Mendes deserves an Oscar for this movie, and I’m sure anybody else who has seen 1917 would agree. I give 1917 full marks of 10/10 and would recommend it to anyone.
