Responding to the Chancellor’s Budget announcement to introduce a plastic packaging tax from 2022, Cllr David Renard, Chairman of the LGA’s Environment, Economy, Housing and Transport Board, said:
“This announcement is a step in the right direction towards reducing unnecessary plastic ending up in our environment.
“Consideration also needs to be given as to how to reduce plastic packaging in the first place and how it can be made easier to recycle.
“Councils are already playing their part when it comes to improving recycling rates, with our waste collection services already diverting millions of tonnes of waste from landfill every year.
“We have been dealing with the cost of recycling and disposing of plastic in household waste, money that could otherwise be spent on vital services such as adult social care and children’s services.
“Councils stand ready to continue working with government and industry to tackle these issues.”
