Set in a time when magic has become past-tense, almost on the verge of being forgotten, until two young elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot embark on a quest. A quest to find the little bit of magic that’s left. Here they discover there’s one chance to spend one last day with their father, who died when they were too young to remember him. Already having tried once with a rare Wizzard stone, Ian, the youngest of the two, was only able to bring back his father’s legs. And now as they embark on this quest, they must find another stone to bring back the rest of him. This tale gives us a truly Heart filled and entertainingly funny adventure.

I was initially quite enthusiastic upon going in to see Onward. Mainly because Pixar is usually consistent in giving great movies without fail. Not all of the time, but most do become what I believe to be instant classics. And some of them really are masterpieces, as I think you would agree.

I’m not sure I would consider Onward to be a masterpiece, but it is pretty damn close. The two brothers, Ian and Barly, voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, I thought brought a lot of energy to the characters and found them to be engaging in their relatability. What we see in Onward isn’t even remotely ground-breaking, but the entertainment never dies down for even a moment. The musical score heightened the emotions in all the right categories and you could really get an understanding of what they were experiencing If that makes sense.

Of all the characters, Ian and Barly were just a joy to see on the screen. The most emotional part of the film for me was the ending which I won’t go into. But I felt like I was watching the end of Toy Story 3. You really have an understanding of the message you get in these movies, which is exactly why I like them.

Onward is really touching and entertaining to watch, but it’s unfortunately not among my favourites. I’d put it in my top 20s for animated films. I definitely would watch it again though.
