Unattended cooking causes fire in Glynneath
At 01:53am this morning, Friday 20th March 2020, firefighters from Glynneath along with a crew from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended a fire at a property in High Street, Glynneath.
The fire was contained to the rear kitchen of a mid-terrace property and extinguished by crews using two breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera. Firefighters also administered oxygen therapy to the male occupier.
All persons were accounted for.
The fire was caused by a chip pan left unattended.
The Fire Service lefty the incident at 03:30am.
Group Manager Richie Felton, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said, “Do not leave your cooking unattended! This is a simple message that people MUST adhere to.
If you must leave the kitchen whilst cooking, ensure that you take pans off the heat or turn hobs off.
Drinking alcohol diminishes your ability to concentrate, therefore do not cook if you have been drinking.
If you must deep fat fry your food, then please use a thermostat controlled electric deep fat fryer as they cannot overheat.
You must also:
· Take care when cooking with hot oil, as it sets alight easily and make sure food is dry before putting it in hot oil so it doesn’t splash.
· If the oil starts to smoke – it’s too hot. Turn off the heat and leave it to cool.
If your pan catches fire, don’t take any risks. Do not tackle the fire yourself. Turn off the heat, if it is safe to do so, but never throw water over it!
Most importantly: Get Out, Stay Out, and Call 999.
Finally, please ensure that you have working smoke alarms installed; test them every week and make sure that you have a clear escape route.”
